14 Used Cars That Have A High Trade-In Value

By Jake Harris

Vehicles are expensive nowadays. It’s alright if you’re looking to use your vehicle for the long-haul, but some of us love to trade in our vehicle every so often, just so we can stay up to date with the ‘latest trends’. The problem is that many used vehicles don’t hold their value all that well. Drive them off the lot, and their value plummets.

The 14 vehicles on this list buck that trend. While you won’t ever get close to the original retail price when you trade them in, these vehicles can easily net you 50-60% of what you paid five years down the line.

We’ll take a look at these vehicles here. All of this information is taken from the Kelley Blue Book, one of the best guides for vehicle resale values in the US. This is based on 2024 models, so expect older models to sell for less. Still, older versions of these vehicles should retain their value well too.

The 2024 Ford Bronco should retain 66.7% of its value in five years, which makes it by far the best ‘used’ vehicle for trade-in. We suppose part of the reason why the Ford Bronco is able to maintain such a high trade-in is because the Ford Bronco is a model that people have come to trust. It is not the quietest vehicle in the world. It isn’t the cheapest. However, it is reliable. It holds its resale value well, and for people looking for a vehicle that is just as good off-road as it is on-road, the Ford Bronco can’t be beaten.

Pick-up truck values are often known for plummeting quite quickly, probably because most of them are designed for work use, rather than general use. The Toyota Tacoma bucks this trend a little. It is known as one of the most reliable pick-up trucks in the world, and has a variety of trims to suit all tastes.

The Toyota Tacoma can easily command 62.6% of its retail value 5-years down the line, because the purchaser knows that even after taking a solid beating, the Toyota Tacoma will still have a lot of life left in it.

Mercedes-Benz vehicles are known for their luxurious nature, and their high-quality engineering. Thank you, Germany. Although, don’t expect them to be cheap. The 2024 model starts at $146,000. Probably out of the reach of many. But, if you’re lucky enough to be able to afford this, expect to trade-in for around 61.2% of its value in 5-years.

2024 Toyota Tundra

The Toyota Tundra is another pick-up that holds its retail value well. Five years down the line, and you can expect to get about 60.4% of the purchase price back.

Again, as a Toyota vehicle, reliability is at the heart of the vehicle. Like many other vehicles on this list, the Toyota Tundra retains its value because people can trust it. They know it will last, and may even keep going well over the 200,000 mile mark. Even older Toyota Tundra models are selling very well as trade-ins. We expect that to continue to happen.

It is a bit of a toss-up what happens to luxury sports cars in a few years. Poorly designed vehicles plummet in value. Well-designed vehicles that are just as good on the engineering front as they are in the looks department thrive on the resale market. Some of them command prices well above the original retail price.

While the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette is never going to sell for above retail as a trade-in, you’ll get 59% of your purchase back in 5 years. It isn’t an expensive sports car to pick up either, with the base model starting at a shade under $60k.

2024 Toyota GR Supra

Yes. It is another Toyota model (and we still have a few more to share too), but Toyota vehicles do hold their value well thanks to their reliability. Built on a BMW platform, the Toyota GR Supra is a superb coupe. It is famed for being wonderful to drive, has superb build quality, and has a slightly better MPG than other Toyota models. Retaining about 57.2% of its value over 5-years, this is a good purchase.

2024 Toyota Prius

We told you there’d be more Toyota models! The Prius is probably a vehicle that needs no introduction, being one of the go-to hybrid/plug-in models for those wanting to lower their fuel costs. It is surprisingly cheap too, with the latest model costing $27,650 new. The major upside is that the Toyota Prius rarely goes through full refreshes, with the latest model making zero major changes from the previous model year. This helps the vehicle to maintain its pricing well, with most people expecting about 55.3% of their purchase price back with a trade-in after 5 years.

The Toyota 4Runner is one of the SUVs where people online speculate that KBB may have got the price a little bit wrong. KBB estimates that the Toyota 4Runner should sell for about 54.6% trade-in after 5 years. However, some of the previous Toyota 4Runner model years have shifted for upwards of 60% more. In all cases, this is a vehicle that holds its value well, thanks to the famed Toyota reliability.

Porsche, known for being a luxury car brand, has always managed to hold its value well. This beautiful vehicle is one of the best-reviewed Porsche vehicles in years. In fact, user reviews (and consumer reports) say that it is one of the best-valued, best handled, sports vehicles on the market right now.

We think that a trade-in value of 54.2% in 5-years, as estimated by KBB, may be somewhat on the low side. Porsche values sell for larger sums of cash, especially when people love them as much as the 718 Cayman.

2024 Ford Maverick

Coming in at around $25,000 new, the Ford Maverick is a compact pick-up truck. It’s great not just for small family use, but as a proper working vehicle. The Maverick has been around in some form for a good while now, and the model has always been proven to be reliable. The versatility of the vehicle means that it is able to hold around 54% of its value after 5 years.

2024 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic doesn’t really have a design to write home about, nor is it all that special in the world of cars. However, it works, and it works very well. Many Honda Civics can be expected to last over 200,000 miles with little in the way of repairs. Because of the reliability, you can expect to get about 53.8% of the value back after 5 years of ownership.

2024 Lexus IS

Lexus has been known for offering some of the best quality sedans in the world. While the Lexus IS could probably do with a bit of a refresh, since it hasn’t had a major one in a while, the 2024 Lexus IS is still a quality vehicle. This RWD vehicle offers a stunning 241 horsepower. It is not the fastest sedan in the world, hitting 60mph in 6.9 seconds, but inside feels sleek and luxurious, and the build quality is out of this world. Basically, what people expect from a Lexus. It is expected to maintain 41.6% of its value over 5 years.

2024 Rivian R1S

While Rivian is hardly the first name people think of when it comes to ‘popular SUVs’, the Rivian R1S has started to change all that. With a huge range, competitive pricing, and superior safety tech, the 2024 Rivian R1S has started to turn heads. Fresh from the factory, the Rivian R1S has a whopping 410 mile range. It is capable of going both on and off-road too, and it performs well on both. It is a sleek, modern-looking vehicle too.

The modern design means that it’ll probably still be eye-catching in a few years, which is why KBB predict it’ll hold 47% of its value.

 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning

The demand for electric trucks has crept up, likely because of the Tesla Cybertruck (which almost certainly won’t hold its value due to the numerous issues). The Ford F-150 has always been a solid workhorse of a truck, and people love them. The 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning is expected to retain 43.1% of its value over the next five years. While it is nowhere near the same level as many of the other models on this list, that figure isn’t too shabby for a truck, most of which would sell for a pittance after being put through their paces.
